Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative type of orthodontic treatment that uses clear, removable aligners instead of braces to straighten teeth. The aligners are made of FDA-approved material —

SmartTrack® — ensuring gentle pressure and a snug fit.

Since you can remove Invisalign aligners to eat and drink, it provides enhanced convenience of orthodontic treatment. Traditional braces use metal brackets and archwires to remain on your teeth for the duration of treatment, but they can cause cuts and swelling in your mouth.

What types of dental issues can Invisalign treat?

At Smile Design Advanced Dentistry, the team uses Invisalign to treat a wide variety of alignment issues, including:

  • Crooked or overlapping teeth
  • Crowding
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • A misaligned jaw

You might also benefit from Invisalign treatment if you have missing gaps between your teeth.

How can I get Invisalign aligners?

When you come in for an Invisalign consultation, the Smile Design Advanced Dentistry team reviews your oral health history and discusses your orthodontic goals. They may also conduct an oral exam and take a series of oral X-rays to assess the misalignment of your jaw and teeth.

If the team determines that you qualify for Invisalign, they proceed with digital impressions of your mouth. Then, they upload your scans to a computer-aided design program to create your customized treatment plan.

The team sends the plan to the Invisalign lab, where they will create your first set of clear aligners. When they’re ready for you to try on, you return to the Smile Design Advanced Dentistry office. The team will make adjustments as necessary to make sure they fit perfectly and comfortably.

If you don’t qualify for Invisalign, the team may recommend traditional braces to help improve the appearance of your smile.

How long does treatment with Invisalign take?

The patient can complete their orthodontic treatment with Invisalign in as little as 12 months*, but it may take longer for some people. The Smile Design Advanced Dentistry team recommends wearing your clear aligners for 22-24 hours a day to encourage your teeth to shift in the optimal position faster. Every few weeks, you return to the office for a new set of aligners that targets different teeth.
